Setting SMARTER Goals

On July 24, 2010, in Steve's Stuff, by Steve

At some point in our lives most of us have experienced the need to want to get better at something or maybe to find a way to do something differently – to achieve an outcome that either makes us happy or one that avoids the feelings of fear or disappointment.

Quite often we will set ourselves challenges or goals to help us achieve the end results that we desire.  But ask yourself, honestly, how often have you been successful in achieving your desired outcome?  Less than you’d like…right?

Was it because you didn’t try hard enough or because the things you wanted were beyond your ability to get, or maybe you’re still working toward your target but it’s just taking longer than you thought.  I don’t know the reason is the honest answer, it could be all of those things or none of those things…only you will really know.

When I want to improve on something I always map out everything that I need to do to be able to achieve it…but I do it in a smarter way!  I ask myself a series of questions to find out why I want to achieve what I want to achieve.

Let me give you an example.
I have just this week completed my three qualifying rounds of golf to get my official handicap and I now play off of 9.0  Which I was very disappointed  by because I know I am a much better player than my handicap suggests.  Now I could just  say – I want to lower my handicap…nothing else..no specifics…just a lower handicap.  That’s my goal.

I could then go out in my next round and shoot 1-under my handicap of 9 and if everything else goes in my favour my handicap would be cut by 0.2 and I would then have a handicap of 8.8 and I would have achieved my goal.

But would I be happy? – Absolutely not!

So my target setting needs to be based around what I actually want to be able to do or ‘feel like’ once I’ve reached my goal.

For me, I want to become a ‘scratch or plus figure handicap golfer’  meaning I’ll have to give the course shots to make par.  Is it achievable.  Am I good enough…right now I don’t know, I hope so.  But ‘hope so’ doesn’t get it done either.

I need to look at my starting point, analyse what I need to improve on and then go and do it….I need to set some goals…and I need to do it SMARTER.

I’ve mentioned that before…so what do I mean.  Well for me SMARTER is something I was taught many years ago that will help set a goal and maximise your chances of success.

Let’s have a look at what it stands for

S – Specific
M – Measurable
A – Achievable
R – Realistic
T – Time Related
E – Exciting
R – Rewarding

Following the above guidance to set my own target here’s mine for the short term.

I want to reduce my playing  handicap to 6 (6.4) by 30 September 2010.

S – Specific – I want to reduce my playing  handicap to 6 (6.4)
M – Measurable – The Handicap Committee will keep a record of my competition rounds.
A – Achievable – There are approx ten opportunities to play in competition rounds before the deadline
R – Realistic – I feel my all round game and current form is good enough to play to a 6 handicap
T – Time Related – My deadline is 30 September 2010
E – Exciting – The pressure I’m putting on myself to achieve this gets my competitive juices flowing
R – Rewarding – When I achieve this standard I will treat myself to a night on the beers with Rich

Setting timescales and Rewarding success are great ways for me to make things exciting, add pressure and a feeling of accomplishment when I succeed…(positive thinking helps too)

Hopefully you will see that by following these set measures, I will be giving myself the best chance of achieving my goal.  This is a short term goal and I have others that I have set for medium to long term.

Be careful to note that these goals are different to things I would also ‘like to do’…for instance, I would ‘like to’ break the course record, I would ‘like to’ have more than 5-birdies in one round.

The SMARTER goal setting can be used for pretty much anything…maybe you would like to write 100 blog posts, maybe create your own product online, maybe you want to lose weight or read more books…this will help you improve your chances of success.

I look forward to hearing about your own goal setting – let us now what it is and leave your own SMARTER in the comments section.

Happy Golfing

Steve

    Hi Steve,

Thanks for commenting on my blog. I did take your comments to heart and deleted the controversial tip. I was given some bad advice by another marketer (supposedly more experienced one)

It’s not my intention to advise anyone to do things that are unethical or unfair.

I added some other tips that hopefully will not get me into any trouble with my fellow marketers.

  2. Hi Steve, I’m sure glad I joined the 100 blog challenge and landed here.

When I saw “golf” I thought – whoops, how can I give a worthwhile comment. Well …..

Planning is universal and – I find – really difficult. But here you’ve made it simple as well as SMARTER – d’ya mind if I copy it, print it and stick it up? Then I will get on and set some goals!

I’ve been wandering along with “I would like to … ” and “It would be nice if…” but now I see what you’re saying about each of SMART – if I define those I’ll be able to set the rest and THEN when I’m asked how things are going I’ll have a benchmark to measure.

Thank you for such a thought-provoking (and action provoking!) post

    Steve,

    Great post mate!
I am a huge advocate for the SMART goal system (never knew about the ER on the end, but love the extra acronym!) and think that if your goals are not all of those things then you will never achieve them.
I also think that people need to know and understand the difference between goals and objectives!
Besides, Goals are constantly changing (or evolving) …
My goal used to be to get my handicap down to 5 (was on 8) but then I had two kids…. Now my goal is to get back out on the golf course one day :)

    Hi Alex
I agree completely about the goals ever evolving.
my handicap target has changed a little already, I got picked for the ‘scratch league team’ and have missed a few competitions that give me the opportunity to get cut…I’m playing at a higher standard but my h/c won’t come down until I reduce it in a medal…I’ll be a bandit before I know it :)
Hope you get out on the course soon…you know what you’re missing!
    Cheers

I like your spin on the old SMART acronym. My biggest hangup with it, though, is the “realistic” part. I think being a little unrealistic at first is a good idea. Dream big, act small…

And, I think goals should stretch us – make us step outside of those comfy zones we love so much and do new and different actions, but without being intimidating. Baby steps. :-)

    [Reply]

    SteveNo Gravatar Reply:

    Hi Mary
I agree that goals should stretch us, but if you dream big (which I like) but take small steps…it’ll take much longer to achieve.
I would rather miss some targets but move forwards more quickly…but at the end of the day it’s what works for the individual.

    Hi Steve,

Your SMARTER analogy really does help to focus the mind. I find that if you don’t set goals you just drift on through life and never really achieve your true potential.

I know from experience as I used to be guilty as charged, it is just too easy to say you will get round to it sooner or later.

Goal setting is so important to successful. I look at it like a map. How do you get to your destination if you do not know your destination. People could be driving in circles without know where to go.

By the way I would love to have a 9 handicap. I am currently at 16 and still hacking away.

I have two word to say ‘Excellent Post’. And it’s very important to know where we are currently (in terms of skills, knowledge, etc) and what we need to do to reach our goals. Only setting a goal does not help achieve it – your definition of SMARTER hammers the nail on its head.

One of the things that I have been shying away from is making a plan and being accountable for it. That’s one of the things I will do during or after this challenge.

    Hi Steve

This is an excellent blog post, which has answered some questions lingering in my mind. Goal setting is indeed so important in everything we do. I feel that many people fail because they set unrealistic goals – goals that are impossible to achieve. What they ought to do is, like what you’ve outlined, to have short, medium and long-term goals. When they take baby steps to achieve their short-term goals, it makes them feel that they are achievable, hence giving them the motivation and confidence to work towards their medium and long-term goals.

Another reason is of course the lack of patience. Many people expect to succeed at their first try, but we all know that is not quite possible. Many thus gave up cos they thought they can never succeed!

All the best to your Internet business!

Setting goals is very important if you are to succeed, but you need to know when you have succeeded and it must be important enough to motivate you to try.

If it isn’t you will not work hard and if you never know when or if you have completed it the whole point is lost.

Very well put. I think I have put my goals on paper about once in my life and never looked at them until years later, when I found them quite by accident. I was shocked to see I had accomplished nearly every one of them in the time I had set. It is not something I would advocate, but it does show the power of the mind to carry on through when it is given some direction.

I am going to try the SMARTER system and see if I can do wee bit better in the days ahead of getting off of dead center.

I am new to all this and also skype, for some reason whenever mention a persons name that I have contacted via skype it leaves a little green tag at the end of their name. I did not intend to do this can you remove it please.
    I am sorry about this…..
    Thanks

Not a problem my friend. The skype tag is their way of making life easy for you. As you say it lists all of the contacts you have on skype.
No one else gets to see the little tag…and to be honest I got fed up with it, so I only log in to skype when I am making a call, I used to leave it running in the background but it does just get annoying…but it is an excellent tool.

    Hi Steve,

You’ve got a great post here and one that everyone should care about. I had never seen the “SMARTER” system before, but I have been through several goal setting systems before. I like this one and it is very simple to follow.

Are you giving golf lessons, as I am sure I could use a bunch?

    All the best!

As always Steve, Great advice. I remember years ago when I was first introduced into sales, one of the first things was to list what I wanted to achieve and work toward each one methodically. My first mistake was to ignore the advice as a load of hogwash.. My second mistake was to take so long in re adopting this method as I am now a true believer in ‘all things are possible’ – BUT you do need to have that mindset at all times. After trying many many times and continually failing to gain any sense of credibility on the marketing front – all due to my self belief in doing things MY way, I now spend more time doing research and background work on other marketers so I know what will and won’t work before I do anything at all. I have tried to reinvent the wheel and it just don’t work.
I placed a pic of 5star all inclusive hotel I liked in Turkey on our freezer door and it has now been achieved so I moved on to a picture of a luxurious motor home which I want to buy without a loan in tow. Keep the goals realistic and in step and you won’t go wrong as long as it is what you REALLY want.

That’s great to hear that you got the holiday you wanted.
I know how hard you work online so I’m sure that coupled with your new researching routine that it’s only a matter of time before you get your motor home…we’ll have to do a road trip when you get it :)

Hope you have a nice time in Bulgaria, catch up when you get back.

Good post about your way of goal setting – something I need to focus on constantly. Love the acronym!

As a high handicapper I would settle for your present handicap myself but I have to say I enjoy golf anyway. Time, we need more time! ;o)

Good luck with the golfing plan.

That’s good advice. It is so easy to be unprecise, to set yourself goals in vague terms and then not to achieve them. When you are careful to set yourself realistic, specific goals in a specified time you are in a much better position to get there.

I totally agree, I used to be non specific in my targets, which more often than not were missed, although without setting deadlines (which I used to do) it was hard to know when I’d failed or succeeded.

    Hi Steve
I had a question along the line of the 100blog challenge. Would there be a value in having a page on each of our sites dedicated to links to other’s sites? If we all called it the same thing, like “Link Love” or something simple like that, would that be of SEO value? I get asked to share links and am considering a page for that. Nothing else on it.
Also, what kind of social bookmarking plug-in would you recommend? I’m totally ignorant about them.
    Thanks

    Hi Alex
    Good question.
There are many factors involved in off page SEO, too many to go into on a GOLF blog :)
A lot of the people who have contributed to the blog post comments challenge are all hosted with D9 and probably share IP addresses.
My best advice for your links page is to only link to things that you like. Or link to the things you like that you would share with your readers and they would enjoy too.
Feel free to email me if you need any specific help :)
    Cheers

I had to increase the number of comments to show in Word Press, Reading section. I prefer to have all the comments show, especially for the Challenge.
